Lisa K. Walraven has enjoyed drawing and painting
from an early age. She always had a love for birds and animals.
Lisa graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelors
degree in Fine Arts. After graduation, Atlanta, Georgia became her
home where she stayed involved in painting, and drawing. Her work
was entered in many local art shows.
Lisa became a bird watcher and her interest in learning
more about nature lead her to a volunteer position in the Wildlife
Department of the Chattahoochee Nature Center. Eventually, she became
a part-time Wildlife Assistant.
Lisa and her husband took several trips to the Southwest.
The art-inspiring landscapes and the unusual bird species attracted
them enough to move to the area. Presently, they live in a charming
art community called Bisbee.
When asked about what mediums she enjoys, Lisa answered:
I have tried a variety of different mediums
in my artwork. To me, experimenting with mediums is a challenging
and fun part of being an artist. For loosely rendered, and intensely
bright pieces, I enjoy the vibrant, rich colors of oil pastels.
They are fun to use because they are so much like a child's crayon.
It is a bit more difficult to get fine detail, but they do blend
nicely.
For milder works of art, I use chalk pastels.
The soft colors feather together, where subdued lighting and shadows
are easily created. The colors of the chalk are naturally diffused
and can be very effective for a quiet feel to the artwork.
My favorite medium is oil paint. This forgiving
medium can be layered for texture and depth. Smooth blending allows
for softer lines. But, the beauty of this medium is, sharp detail
can be created readily.
