during the Family Literacy Workshop.
The two photographs above show the parents as they read and sing
The Sing to Read Adventure storybooks in small groups.
The parents demonstrate the importance of tracking under the text
left to right with a pointer or finger. Tracking left to right under
the text is an early literacy concept that draws attention to the
text as well as teaching the directionality of print.
The small groups added creative movement to the storybooks. Creative
movement or dramatizing a story is a great way to involve children
while reading and singing. Creative actions help internalize the
language in the storybook and song.
3. The three photographs
above show how the small groups
work together to answer questions about
their storybook
and song. Each group had a different
storybook and
song to review.
4. The two photographs
above show how each small group
presented their storybook and song by
singing and
reading the storybook 2 times with the
large group. The
small groups also incorporated the creative
movement
while presenting.
5. Each
small group designated a spokesperson to share
their answers from their storybook review
with the
large group.
